Tuesday September 25, 2007 IT WAS a whopping catch that won RM30,000 for Sidek Yusof in a fishing competition held during Cyberjaya’s 50th Merdeka celebration carnival last weekend.

Sidek reeled in a Lekoh weighing 5.5kg and netted the grand prize of RM30,000 and a hamper.

Nasarudin Mohd Ramli came in second with a catch of 4.2kg and took home RM14,000 while third-placed Rozilam Mohd Husin, with a haul of 3.4kg, received RM6,000.

The two-day carnival held at the township’s community hall attracted more than 3,000 people.

Organised by the key stakeholders in Cyberjaya, the event was aimed at bringing together Cyberjaya residents and attracting the public from outside to visit the township.

The carnival is among the concerted continuous efforts undertaken by the key stakeholders to organise various activities in the intelligent township.

“We will indeed include this sort of event as part of the annual programme for the community within Cyberjaya as well as neighbouring townships,” Cyberview managing director Redza Rafiq said.

Twelve events were held during the two-day carnival, with Suria FM providing crossover broadcast for listeners and visitors.

A futsal tournament, paintball challenge and mini motor race kick-started the carnival. The response was overwhelming with the participation of 50 futsal teams, 30 paintball teams and 61 mini motor racers.

The events on the first day were capped with a karaoke competition, which unearthed new talents, while the simulator, go-kart and paraglider events drew the crowd on the second day.

The finale of the day was what the youngsters were waiting for – a live performance at which the crowd was entertained by the likes of the alluring pop and R&B singer Ning Baizura, Waheeda, Malaysian Idol runner-up Dina and music industry newcomers Ellyana and an energising performance by boy bands – the fabulous Cats and Pretty Ugly.
